Kuala Lumpur, 4 June 2009 - As an extension to the existing environmental conservation efforts and in conjunction with The World Environment Day, Ricoh Malaysia is proud to collaborate with KL Monorail to place environment-friendly green benches at the Medan Tuanku station for the usage of commuters. This environmental friendly effort was witnessed by directors and key managers of both Ricoh Malaysia and KL StarRail.

Made from recycled toner bottles and toner cartridges, these environment-friendly green benches will be placed at Medan Tuanku Station to encourage commuters to adopt recycling activities as part of their lifestyle and responsibility. In addition to the green benches, there will also be information placed next to them highlighting the process of how the benches were made with the objective to raise the level of awareness and educate the commuters on saving the environment.

According to Managing Director of Ricoh Malaysia, Mr Lim Eng Weng, Ricoh believes in being outstanding in all areas of the environment, economy and corporate social responsibility. As environmental problems are a global issue, it is especially important that all corporations around the globe be responsible for managing their operations in order to reduce the environmental impact of their own business activities.

"The changing global environment is posing a threat to the world community. Natural resources are depleting at an increasing pace. Therefore, business communities have a large role to play in reducing the environmental impact. At Ricoh, we are expected to reduce not only the environmental impact of our business activities, but also to help reduce that of consumers and society by encouraging consumers to use the environmental technologies incorporated into our products," Lim said.

"Ricoh is very committed to becoming a business leader in promoting the conservation of the environment. In conjunction with World Environment Day, Ricoh Malaysia will be shutting off non-essential office lights (inclusive RICOH sign board at Axis Plaza) at 7 pm daily from June 5 to June 12, 2009 to reduce the energy consumption and its impact to the environment. In addition, we also hope to raise the level of awareness on saving the environment to the staff of Ricoh Malaysia and general public. In addition, we are constantly and actively involved in many environment conservation activities as part of our corporate responsibility programme," he added.

Lim went on to explain that Ricoh Malaysia has been proactive in protecting the environment through various on-going programmes such as the Toner Bottle, Toner Cartridge and Machine Takeback Programme. Toner bottles, toner cartridges and machines taken back are sent to Department of Environment (DOE) approved recycler for recycling. This is to ensure that they do not end up being disposed in a landfill. In addition, Ricoh Malaysia organises various environmental related activities on a regular basis. Some example activities are Tree Planting in Cameron Highlands, Mangrove replanting in Pulau Kukup, Kuala Gula and Tanjung Piai, Beach Cleaning in Port Dickson.

The Ricoh Group was chosen in 2008 as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World for the fourth consecutive year. It incorporates and emphasizes on environmental management within its products, offices and services as part of their environmental conservation efforts to drastically reduce negative impacts on our environment.

"By making use of the environmental technologies incorporated into our products, consumer benefits by reducing their impact to the environment, and cost savings can be realised at the same time. For instance, power consumption of our products can be reduced by up to 70% when energy saving mode is enabled. In addition, paper consumption can be drastically reduced by utilising the duplex, combine or enhanced locked print mode," he added.

Ricoh is the first office solutions provider to offer Total Green Office Solutions (TGOS) in Malaysia. The solutions incorporate elements that help to reduce the environmental impact and improve customers’ business processes. Some of the core elements include the green product design that allows parts to be recycled, energy efficiency that helps to reduce energy usage and paper reduction features that reduce paper printing wastage. This will help customers to reduce wastage on resources, thus maximizing profits and also reduce the negative impact on the environment.
